Every fall there's a Call of Duty, and every fall a bunch of dads in their forties get absolutely farmed by teenagers. This year's entry is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and it launches Friday, October 23.

Who made it and what it's about

Infinity Ward, the studio behind the original Modern Warfare run, is back in charge. The campaign opens with a North Korean invasion of South Korea. You play as Private Park, a young South Korean soldier, while Captain Price runs his own off-the-books revenge mission against the people backing the invasion. The story travels from trench fighting in Korea to New York, Paris and Mumbai.

If the words "Captain Price" still make you think of a ghillie suit crawling through Pripyat, you're the target audience and Activision knows it.

Platforms

  • PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam, Battle.net, Microsoft Store)
  • Nintendo Switch 2, co-developed with Digital Legends. Activision lists Switch 2 among its early access platforms, but early reports differed on whether that version lands day one, so confirm before you buy.
  • No PS4 or Xbox One. Last-gen is officially done for new CoD.

Price and the Game Pass catch

  • Standard Edition: $69.99
  • Vault Edition: $99.99, adding operator packs, a weapon collection, a season pass and DMZ bonuses

Here's the big change: Modern Warfare 4 won't be on Game Pass at launch. According to reports, that was part of a deal that lowered Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass prices. If you were counting on playing it "for free" with your subscription, budget for it instead.

Early access

Campaign early access returns for the first time in a few years. If you digitally pre-order the Standard or Vault edition, you can start the campaign on Friday, October 16, a full week before launch. Activision says the date could still change and didn't give a start time.

For a working adult, this is actually a decent perk. A CoD campaign typically runs a handful of hours. A week's head start means you can knock it out before multiplayer chaos takes over your evenings.

Multiplayer and DMZ

Multiplayer launches with 12 core maps plus Gunfight and larger Big War maps, and a new map called Kill Block that rearranges itself between rounds. DMZ, the extraction mode, returns with you playing as deniable operatives behind enemy lines. Open beta weekends ran in late August and early September.

The bottom line

It's Call of Duty. You already know if you're buying it. The real decisions are whether you want the campaign early, whether the Vault extras are worth $30 to you (they're cosmetics and a season pass, so probably not), and whether losing the Game Pass safety net changes your math. Reviews aren't out yet, so if you're on the fence, waiting a week costs you nothing but bragging rights.
