Giants head coach John Harbaugh announced earlier this week that J.J. McCarthy will start at quarterback for Week 7 against the Houston Texans on October 25. The call comes after McCarthy entered the Saints game in the fourth quarter and led a furious rally that fell short—enough to convince Harbaugh it's time to see what the kid can do with a full game.

McCarthy took over for Jameis Winston late in that New Orleans matchup with the Giants buried 34-10. In his limited time, he hit 11 of 21 throws for 243 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception, and ran for 26 yards on the ground. He engineered a comeback that brought New York within a score at 34-27 before the Saints closed it out—a real spark in a game that looked dead.

New York picked McCarthy up from Minnesota last month in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick. The Vikings had drafted him No. 10 overall in 2024, so he carries genuine pedigree. The Giants needed a move after Jaxson Dart went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 2, leaving the cupboard bare at the position.

This is a legitimate audition. Harbaugh isn't just plugging in a body because the depth chart is empty—he's putting a first-round talent on the field against a real playoff contender to find out if the kid has what it takes. The Texans aren't a gimme, so if McCarthy can manage the game and keep drives alive, it tells you something real about his future in a Giants uniform.

The Radazoid take

Back in the day, a backup QB got maybe one shot. You either had the goods or you hit the bench for good. McCarthy's getting a real chance to prove himself—multiple reps, game film, the chance to learn on the job. That's the right move when your starter is tanking and you've got young talent waiting in the wings. Let him play, let him fail or succeed on tape, and find out if this offense can actually move the ball downfield. This is how you build a roster instead of cycling through retreads.

This is good news for Giants fans tired of watching their team score in single digits. Winston wasn't the answer, and you can't win in this league when your QB is a liability. McCarthy showed life when it mattered most, even in a losing effort. That's enough to deserve a real start. Now we find out if he's the future or just another young arm that looked good for a quarter.
