League of Legends Classic shutting down in January after three months

Could a trip back to old-school League keep players around, or was it always going to be a short visit?

Riot Games launched League of Legends Classic in July 2026, giving players a chance to revisit champions, items and systems from an earlier version of the game. By January 2027, it will be gone.

The company announced Classic will end service after the close of Season 3 of 2026. According to Riot, most players went back to other parts of League of Legends once the initial wave of curiosity wore off. The queues dried up, and keeping a separate mode alive for a shrinking crowd stopped making sense.

What Happens Next

The company plans to bring Classic back eventually as a limited-time event mode with tweaks and new additions, though no date was given. Players who bought Classic-specific content that will no longer work will get refunds.

Before the shutdown, Riot is adding a few more champions to the roster. Patch 26.21 brings Mordekaiser, Yorick, Hecarim and Lucian, and future patches will add Volibear, Urgot and Udyr. The same patch includes the Act II Classic Battle Pass, which will have a free track only.

Why It Matters

Classic was a test: could a straight shot of old-school League hold players who grew up on the game, or at least pull back the ones who quit when the meta changed? The answer, apparently, was no. Nostalgia gets you in the door, but if the gameplay doesn't hold up or the population thins out, people leave.

Turning it into a rotating event mode makes more sense than keeping a separate queue running 24/7 for a handful of diehards. It's the same lesson Call of Duty learned years ago: nostalgia works in doses, not as a full-time job.

If you never tried Classic and you're curious what the old League felt like, you have until January. After that, it's back to the vault until Riot decides the time is right for another lap.
