Tom Skerritt, who died this week at 93, was the guy you trusted. Captain, commander, sheriff, dad: when a movie in the 80s and 90s needed someone the audience would believe in the first second he walked on screen, Skerritt got the call. Here's the run that made him one of the most dependable faces of the era.
Alien (1979)
Technically a year early, but it starts everything. Skerritt plays Captain Dallas, the commander of the Nostromo, and his calm, tired, working-man authority is a big reason Ridley Scott's horror classic feels so real before it turns terrifying.
Watch it: Top Gun 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on Amazon (The definitive Tom Skerritt 80s role as the commanding officer; experience the classic in the best quality available.)
The Dead Zone (1983)
In David Cronenberg's Stephen King adaptation he's Sheriff George Bannerman, a small-town lawman hunting a killer with help from Christopher Walken's psychic. Steady, decent and in over his head, which is exactly the point.
Top Gun (1986)
The big one. Skerritt is Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf, the man running the school and keeping Maverick and company in line. He doesn't yell, he doesn't need to, and he gets some of the best lines in the movie. That same year he also turned up in SpaceCamp.
Cheers (1987-88)
On TV he played Evan Drake, the rich businessman Rebecca Howe fell hard for. A smooth, funny turn that showed he could do more than uniforms.
Steel Magnolias (1989)
As Drum Eatenton, Sally Field's husband and the dad of the family at the center of the story, he holds his own in a cast loaded with heavyweights.
The Rookie (1990) and A River Runs Through It (1992)
He worked for Clint Eastwood in The Rookie, then gave one of his finest performances for Robert Redford as Reverend John Maclean, the stern, loving Montana father of two very different sons. If you only know him from Top Gun, start here.
Picket Fences (1992-96)
His best TV work. As Sheriff Jimmy Brock in David E. Kelley's quirky small-town drama, he won the Emmy for lead actor in a drama series. He closed out the decade as David Drumlin in Contact (1997), the scientist who keeps getting in Jodie Foster's way.
Remembering Tom Skerritt
Skerritt died this week at 93, news that broke on October 22, 2026. He kept working almost to the end: he led the 2021 drama East of the Mountains and appeared in Broke in 2025.
The Radazoid take
Every great 80s movie needed a grown-up in the room, and Skerritt was the best of them. He made the heroes look better by being the guy they had to earn respect from, and he never once oversold it.
Start with Top Gun and Alien, then do yourself a favor and watch A River Runs Through It. It's the role that shows how good he really was.
