Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th prequel series from Peacock and A24, is now streaming. Linda Cardellini stars as Pamela Voorhees, Jason's mother, in a story set before the hockey mask, the machete and the body count we grew up on.

All eight episodes are available on Peacock, so you can binge it in a weekend and decide for yourself whether a prequel about Jason's mom was ever necessary.

The timeline doesn't match

Here's the thing: the original Friday the 13th said Jason drowned in 1957. Crystal Lake moves that to the early 1970s. That's not a small tweak—it's a rewrite of the franchise's foundation, and fans who know the lore have already noticed.

Refresher: the original Friday the 13th

The 1980 film opened with a camp massacre in 1958, then jumped to 1980 when counselors tried to reopen Camp Crystal Lake. Pamela Voorhees, the cook whose son Jason drowned in 1957 due to negligent counselors, went on a killing spree. That setup made her the villain of the first movie and turned Jason into the unstoppable force of the sequels. Moving the drowning to the 70s changes the entire timeline and the gap between Jason's death and his mother's revenge.

What you're actually getting

This is A24 doing horror, which means mood, atmosphere and a slow burn. Cardellini is a solid actress, and if you're into character work over kills, she'll probably deliver. But if you're hoping for the Friday the 13th you remember from the VHS rack at the video store, this isn't it. The series is a prequel, which means you're getting the setup, not the slaughter.

Whether it's worth your time depends on how much you care about the timeline and how patient you are with prequels that mess with the source material. It's streaming now.
