The next Mummy movie has a title and a date. Universal Pictures says The Mummy: Book of the Dead arrives in theaters October 15, 2027, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz reprising their roles as Rick and Evie from Stephen Sommers' 1999 original.

Weisz skipped the 2008 sequel The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, where Maria Bello filled in, so her return is a big deal. The supporting cast from the first film is coming back too: John Hannah, Kevin J. O'Connor and Oded Fehr all signed on.

What we know

The title references the cursed book that resurrected Imhotep and kicked off the chaos in the 1999 film. No plot details yet, but reuniting Fraser and Weisz nearly three decades later signals Universal wants to recapture what worked instead of chasing whatever Hollywood thinks is relevant now.

The original balanced action, humor and classic adventure without preaching. It made Fraser and Weisz into stars, launched two sequels and a spin-off, and still holds up. The 2017 Tom Cruise reboot tried to build a Dark Universe and bombed, so going back to the original cast is the right call.

Why it matters

Hollywood loves killing beloved franchises by erasing what fans liked and replacing it with lectures. This one is doing the opposite: it's bringing back the people who made the original great and leaning into what worked.

Fraser's career is back on track, Weisz never stopped being excellent, and the supporting cast brings the chemistry that made the first movie more than just effects and sand. If they capture even half the fun of 1999, this will stand out in a crowded October lineup.

October 2027 is a long wait, but at least it's a proper sequel with the original cast, not another reboot pretending the first films never existed.
