Cyberpunk 2077 movie will tell original story, not adapt game plot
Can an original Night City story succeed where most game adaptations fail?

CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed in an interview with Polish outlet PAP Biznes that the Cyberpunk 2077 movie won't retell the game's story. Instead, it'll be an original tale set in the same Night City universe. That means no V, no Johnny Silverhand's ghost in your head, no replaying the branching endings you already saw.
Good. The game's plot was built for dozens of hours of choices, side gigs and relationships that don't compress into a two-hour runtime. Watching a Hollywood version of something you already played through would just feel like a downgrade. An original story gives them freedom to show a different corner of the world without being stuck to what fans already experienced.
Refresher: The Cyberpunk World
Night City is a neon-lit dystopia run by megacorps where life is cheap and chrome is everything. The setting has enough depth for multiple stories beyond any one character's arc, which is exactly what an original movie needs.
The Studio Situation
CD Projekt Red's original deal with Anonymous Content ran out before they signed with Paramount Pictures. Paramount has since merged with Warner Bros. under the Skydance banner, so the movie's now part of a much bigger operation. That could mean more resources and distribution muscle, or it could mean studio interference. We'll see which way it goes.
What It Could Mean
If the script leans into what makes cyberpunk work—morally gray characters, corpo greed, street-level survival in a world that chews people up—this could be one of the rare game adaptations that respects the source without just copying it. The city and the genre are the draw here, not any one character's arc. The risk is turning it into a generic action movie with neon set dressing instead of letting the world's edge show through.
No release date, no director, no cast announced yet. It's early, and there's a long road between now and theaters.
