Contra is one of the hardest games ever made, and Konami knew it. That's why the Konami Code was born on the NES version—and why every Contra game that followed packed its own bag of tricks to help you survive. Here's the complete rundown for the versions that defined the series.
NES Contra (1987)
The original is where it all started, and the Konami Code is the most famous cheat in gaming history.
Play it: Contra Anniversary Collection on Amazon (Play all the classic Contra games mentioned with cheats intact on modern hardware)
- 30 Lives: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start. Enter it at the title screen before you press Start. You'll hear a beep when it works.
- Spread Gun: Find it in Stage 1 (the jungle). Grab it early and you've got a much better shot at the later levels.
- Flame Thrower: Hidden in Stage 3 (the base). It tears through enemies at close range.
- Laser Gun: Stage 5 has this one. It's slow but powerful.
- Stage Select: No documented stage select cheat exists for the original NES version.
Super C (NES, 1990)
The sequel kept the Konami Code alive and added new wrinkles.
- 30 Lives: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start. Same code, same magic.
- Spread Gun and Other Weapons: Hidden throughout the levels. Stage 1 has the Spread Gun; Stage 2 has the Laser. Learn the level layouts and you'll find them.
- Two-Player Mode: Available from the start; no cheat needed.
Contra III: The Alien Wars (SNES, 1992)
The 16-bit jump brought tougher AI and new cheat options. The Konami Code doesn't work here, but SNES Contra III has its own tricks.
- 30 Lives: No Konami Code on this one. You'll have to earn your lives or use a Game Genie.
- Weapon Power-Ups: Spread Gun, Laser, and Flame Thrower are scattered through levels. The Spread Gun is your best friend; find it early.
- Difficulty Levels: Choose from the start. Easier difficulty gives you more breathing room on your first run.
- Sound Test: Highlight "Nonstop" on the main menu, press and hold Select, then press Start. You can listen to the soundtrack.
- Two-Player Co-Op: Available in Story Mode. Having a partner makes the game significantly easier.
Contra: Hard Corps (Genesis, 1992)
The Genesis answer to Contra III went its own way with branching paths and a different cheat structure.
- 30 Lives: No Konami Code on Genesis. Game Genie codes were the way to go if you wanted infinite lives.
- Weapon Pickups: Spread Gun, Laser, and Flame Thrower return. The Spread Gun is essential, as always.
- Branching Paths: Hard Corps lets you choose different routes through levels based on your performance. Some paths are easier than others.
- Multiple Endings: Your choices and performance throughout the game determine which ending you see. There are four total.
- Two-Player Mode: Co-op is available and makes the game more manageable.
Why the Konami Code Matters
The Konami Code became a legend because Contra was brutally hard. Giving players 30 lives instead of the standard three made the game playable for regular people, not just arcade pros. It's the reason so many of us beat it as kids. Konami used the code in dozens of games over the years, but Contra is where it earned its place in gaming history.
Tips Beyond the Cheats
- The Spread Gun is the most powerful weapon in every version. Prioritize finding it.
- In two-player co-op games, coordinate with your partner. One covers high, one covers low.
- Learn the patterns. Contra enemies aren't random; they spawn the same way every time. Memorize the levels and you'll survive longer.
- On NES, the Konami Code works at the title screen only. You can't pause and enter it mid-game.
Whether you're playing the original on an old NES, running SNES Contra III on a modern console, or hunting down a Genesis copy of Hard Corps, these cheats and tricks will help you get further than you would on raw skill alone. The Konami Code didn't just make Contra beatable—it made the series a cultural touchstone.
