Sony's Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition launches in Japan with a region lock
The all-black console hits Japan on November 19 for 55,000 yen, but it only works with Japanese accounts and language settings.

Sony's releasing an all-black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in Japan on November 19. The price is 55,000 yen, which lands somewhere between $350 and $380 depending on exchange rates.
Sounds good until you hit the fine print. This thing is region-locked.
The Midnight Black model uses the same locked-down hardware Sony rolled out in Japan last November. Your PlayStation account must be set to Japan. Your system language must be Japanese. No exceptions. Sony built the lock to prevent exports, and it works exactly as intended.
A matching Midnight Black disc drive will also launch, sold separately for anyone who wants physical games.
No word on a wider release
Sony hasn't announced plans to bring the Midnight Black PS5 anywhere beyond Japan. Right now it's a domestic release with zero hints about expansion.
Western players who want the look can already grab Midnight Black console covers for $54 or £45. You snap them on your existing PS5 and call it a day. Not quite the same as a factory-black unit, but you skip the region lock nightmare.
The lock ruins it
An all-black PS5 looks clean. No argument there. But the region restrictions make importing pointless.
You can't sign in with your main account. You can't change the language. You're locked to Japanese storefronts and services. Even if you're willing to jump through hoops, you're building a completely separate gaming ecosystem just to own a black console.
Unless you're already in Japan or committed to running a full Japanese setup, skip this one. The covers give you the aesthetic without turning your PS5 into a paperweight.
